    I-PHONE BENDING CHALLENGE

    OBJECTIVES

In this challenge, simulate the bending of iPhone as per the given cases below

Case 1: Simulate the model as it is given in the video

Case 2: Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation. Also define the S-N curve for the Aluminium Alloy material as per values given below and determine the fatigue life results for the same.

    PROCEDURE

    • First, we have to input the engineering materials with required properties or else by creating with required properties.

    • Then we have to import our model into ansys, import the model and open it in space claim so that ansys will read it.

    • Make sure except the pushing finger all the finger stiffness is rigid.

    • Then assign required connections in this assignment we will use bonded contact between the frame and glass, frictional joints between the phone and the finger and translational joint for the pushing fingers.

    • Then mesh the component with required mesh size in this assignment we will use
      • Mesh               â€“ default
      • Sizing              â€“ 4mm
      • Nodes              – 21499
      • Elements          – 8981

    • Analysis setting assign fixed support for the inner body of the phone, directional load with free Y and translational displacement.

    • Then give the required solution parameters then solve.

    RESULTS

    CASE1:

    Directional deformation

    Equivalent strain

    Equivalent stress

CASE2: Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation. Also define the S-N curve for the Aluminium Alloy material as per values given below and determine the fatigue life results for the same.

    Directional deformation

    Equivalent strain

    Equivalent stress

    Life

    Safety factor

    CONCLUSION

Total Deformation (mm) Max Equivalent strain Max Equivalent stress (MPa) Life
    Case 1 8.20 0.0088 620.09 1E+08
    Case 2  7.989 0.0085 475.6 1E+08

From the above stimulation the life of the frame is 1e+08 and the safety factor of the frame is 15, the max stress is greater when the fingers are at the corners than middle and the strain in both the cases are found to be equal.
